L-Lysine has been shown to reduce the recurrence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections (eg. cold sores) by maintaining the lysine to arginine ratio in the system.
HSV are known to utilize L-arginine in their replications, and hence, they thrive in environment high in arginine. L-lysine is able to inhibit the uptake of L-arginine to limit the outbreak of infection.
