Numerous uncontrolled and randomized controlled have demonstrated that Saw Palmetto Extract resulted in improvement in men with an enlarged prostate. Clinical benefits included a decrease in daytime urinary frequency, and post-void residual volume; an increase in urinary flow rate; and an improvement in the International Prostate Symptom Score.
A review of 18 randomized controlled trials, involving a total of 2,939 men, concluded that Saw Palmetto improved urinary tract symptoms and measures of urinary flow. Saw Palmetto was comparable to Finasteride and was associated with fewer adverse effects.
Most of the studies of Saw Palmetto used an extract standardized to contain 85-95% fatty acids and sterols. The dosage in most studies was 160 mg twice a day, although 2 studies found that a single dose of 320 mg was as effective as 160 mg twice a day.
